Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, all materials are safe when used as directed.

The rule of thumb is you should never mow more than 1/3 of the grass blade height. For example, if your lawn is six inches tall you should only mow two inches off. In the spring, grass tends to grow faster fertilized or not.

24 hours. This allows fertilizer to settle and for weed control to work through plant tissues.

When weed control is applied, wait for two to four hours or until weed control is dry.

About every 15 hours of cutting time.

We recommend 2 ½ inches to 3 inches all year. Mowing shorter will promote crabgrass and weeds.

Weeds should start to curl and die five to seven days after application. If weeds are still actively growing after 21 days and you’re on a full lawn care program, we will retreat for weeds at no additional charge.

Yes, this allows us to provide timely service and maintain quality.

Quality Turf Services, Inc provides full-season crabgrass protection if you’re on a six-step program. If crabgrass preventative is applied in the spring, we guarantee to keep crabgrass out and will apply a post-emergent to control.

Lawns should receive 1 to 1 ½ inches of water per week either from rainfall, sprinklers, or both.

Early morning is the best time to water. The grass should be dry before nightfall to help prevent disease outbreaks. Most fungus thrives in dark and moist conditions.

Yes, the active ingredient lasts only one year. Grubs prefer a healthy thick lawn but will infest less healthy lawns. Protecting your lawn yearly is an important investment.

Late spring.

Yes. In order to activate this product, it needs to be watered in with one inch of water.

Aeration Questions

This is dependent on soil and turf type. Highly compacted soils should be aerated at least once a year. Sodded lawns should be aerated twice a year spring and fall due to thatch and soil conditions.

Nothing. This is your soil, and it will break down over the next few weeks with rainfall, watering, and mowing.

Slice Seeding Questions

Whenever a lawn becomes thin from heavy use or disease or insect damage.

Every day for three to four weeks.

As with any living thing the new seed requires consistent soil moisture. If the seed is not watered on a regular basis, it will not grow or fill in. We cannot guarantee seeding because you, as the homeowner, have the responsibility of watering the new seed to ensure growth.

Early spring before crabgrass preventative is applied or August through late September. If pre-emergent crabgrass control is not applied, seeding can be done anytime during the year as long as it is watered.

Allow debris to dry and then it can be picked up with a mower after initial watering.

If seeding into the existing stand, you can mow regularly with a sharp blade.

If slice seeding is done in spring, we do not guarantee against crabgrass. Your lawn needs to be mowed up to four times. This can take anywhere from 30-60 days before weed controls can be applied.

Watering

Don’t Forget the Basics

When it comes to taking care of your lawn, one of the most important maintenance practices is also one of the most basic—watering.

Teamwork

As the company that takes care of your lawn, you can count on us to apply the correct fertilizer and control products at the right time of the year. In turn, we must count on you to properly water your lawn. It is important that we function as a team. Please read the information we leave at the door. Some applications should be watered in the right way, while others should not be watered for at least a day.

Watering Tips

Your lawn should receive roughly 1 to 1 ½ inches of water per week during the hottest, driest months. Deep watering to a soil depth of at least 6 inches is recommended. Light watering that merely dampens the grass is of little benefit and can actually harm your lawn. Place an empty coffee can or bucket on your lawn to determine how long it takes to apply 1 to 1 ½ inches of water.

Very early morning watering is ideal. Midday watering, when the weather is hot and dry, can waste water due to excessive evaporation. Evening watering tends to promote disease problems. Keep in mind that the key to effective watering is to give your lawn enough moisture to reach the deep roots of the grass plants.

During the summer months, it is a good idea to water your lawn the day before you mow and then try to mow during the coolest part of the day. This minimizes the browning effect of summer mowing and decreases the time it takes the turf to heal. Mow your lawn as it needs it. Never remove more than 1/3 of the leaf blade at any one time.
